Background

Historically, the Centre Hospitalier Intercommunal d’Annemasse-Bonneville (“CHIAB”) was located on two different sites: Annemasse and Bonneville, 20km apart. The Project merged all hospital activities into a single site, located in
Contamine-sur-Arve midway between the two cities. The new facility comprises 445 beds and has general practitioner, surgery and obstetrics/gynecology departments.
In 2008, the Project Company signed a long-term hospital lease with the French State, represented by the “Ministry of Health” through the CHIAB, for the financing, construction and operation of the new hospital. It will cover an overall period of 31 years post-construction. Construction of the hospital was completed in 2011.
The Centre Hospitalier Alpes Léman (CHAL, new name of the CHIAB) handles ca. 38,000 hospitalisations, 200,000 medical consultations, 60,000 admissions to Emergency Department and 2,000 births a year (2021 data). It trains more than 300 medical students a year.
Since 2016, the CHAL has been heading the Leman – Mont Blanc GHT (Groupement Hospitalier de Territoire) and its 5500 employees (including 500 doctors) in 7 hospitals.

50% of the heating needs of the hospital are met by wood biomass, locally sourced. The extension building that opened in Q1 2020 includes a shelter for homeless people. The Greenhouse gas study was updated in 2021.
The hospital is the first employer of North Haute-Savoie with 2 000 employees.

For the last 10 years the CHAL has been involved in a national scientific program to track pollution of the natural environment by pharmaceutical residues from hospitals.
