Successful financial close and official contract start of a new and sustainable PPP motorway project in Germany

This program was launched in 2005 by the German Federal Government to refurbish, upgrade and partially develop more than 20 essential Federal roads. Preparatory construction works are to start this September 2020 and completion is scheduled in autumn 2024.

This project will improve the safety and traffic conditions, which has experienced substantial increase due to its central location in Germany, as well as connectivity in the region and therefore its economic and social development.

The project held equally (50:50) between Meridiam and STRABAG, consists in the design, financing, construction, operation and maintenance of the A49 motorway section (62 km long with a mix of greenfield construction and an existing section). It is located in the German State of Hesse, between the junction Fritzlar (South of Kassel) and the junction Ohmtal-Dreieck (North of Frankfurt).

This project illustrates Meridiam commitment to build sustainable and resilient mobility infrastructure. It further consolidates its footprint in the mobility sector in Germany as the firm now manages four road assets and close to 200 km in the country (A5 between Baden-Baden and Offenburg, A4 section east of Eisenach and A7 between Bockenem and Göttingen in Lower Saxony) and more than 3,000 km globally.

In Germany, Meridiam is also developing The NeuConnect Interconnector (around 720km of subsea cables) that will create the first direct power link between Germany and Great Britain, allowing to provide up to 1.5 million homes in electricity. The energy supplied will be resilient, economic and sustainable, promoting the integration of renewable energy sources. In partnership with Vodafone Deutschland, Meridiam is also building a fiber optic network for 25 municipalities and their 40 000 inhabitants, 100 km north west of Frankfurt.
