Our Impact
PisaMover, Italy
Background
In 2022, Meridiam acquired a majority stake in the Pisamover project. Pisamover SpA is responsible for the design, construction, financing, operation, and maintenance of the cable-based people mover infrastructure connecting Pisa Airport to the city’s railway station. It is also responsible for two “park and ride” facilities (1250 lots) at the intermediary stop “San Giusto – Aurelia”, located along the Firenze – Livorno highway.
The project originally commenced operations in March 2017 and carries over 1 millions passengers per year. The rebalanced concession with the Municipality of Pisa runs until June 2054.
Meridiam has acquired 72% of the project with Leitner retaining the remaining shares. Leitner are the original provider of the cable-based technology and will stay as minority shareholder and back-to-back O&M contractor.

ESG / SDG Key Facts
The project is a green, sustainable, full-electric mobility solution that actively contributes to reduce the CO2 emissions in the area. Additional commercial collaborations with the airport and the airlines are being explored.
SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation)
The carriage washing plant has a water reuse and purification system.
SDG 7 (Affordable and clean energy)
As part of the rebalancing, the Municipality has approved the installation of a 400kW photovoltaic system over the parking facilities that will feed the shuttle system.
SDG 11 (Sustainable cities and communities)
Offering a reliable transport connection, the Project incentives the use of public transportation and promotes the combined use of different modes of transport (train, local transportation, car, airplanes). About 25% of the tickets are currently being sold as integrated ticketing solutions (mostly with the train to Florence). The Project’s location near a highway also contributes to the decrease of car traffic in the
centre of Pisa through the managed parking lots and “park and ride” tickets granting customers discounts for using both parking facilities and the Pisamover.
