Background

The hospital is located in Vigo, in the autonomous community of Galicia (northwest Spain). The 347,600m2 public hospital has a c. 2,000 bed capacity serving a population of 600,000 people. The complex includes three hospitals, New Vigo Hospital (1,465 beds), Meixoeiro Hospital (422 beds) and the Nicolás Peña Hospital (120 beds), known collectively as the Complejo Hospitalario Universitario de Vigo (CHUVI). The project includes the operation of non-clinical services. Vigo Hospital was the first project of its kind in the region and is the reference point for similar governmental developments.
Vigo Hospital has subcontracted the operation and maintenance to Vigo Opco and this entity has subcontracted most services (except for the 91,000m2 car park) to third-party subcontractors. These relationships are typically back-to-back where the subcontractor bears the full risk in case of penalties from the Grantor.
Vigo Hospital and Vigo Opco are 30% owned by Infra Invest Iberia following the purchase of Acciona shares in the project in December 2021.

ESG/SDG Key Facts

In Q4 2024, the hospital was awarded two international prizes, the “Premio #Sanidad por el Clima” and “2024 Health Care Climate Challenge”. The Project is recognized as leading hospital in active carbon emissions reductions.
Collaboration is ongoing with an Organisation to promote Healthcare for Diabetic Youths (ANEDIA), with the National Blind Association (ONCE), with Healthcare Students working in the hospital, with Galiclown (Artists that collaborates with oncology infants), with Valladares FC (Local Club), and with the Biomedical Foundation in the hospital. In Q4 2024, the Project Company consolidated the agreement with Castrelos FC to provide scholarships enabling children in need to play football for another 2 years.

SDG 7 (Affordable and clean energy) –

The installation of additional solar panels (from 749 to 5,400, totalling 3.5MWp) on the roof of the hospital started in Q2 2024, and was completed in Q1 2025 with final tests ongoing.
Pending the addition of these new panels, c. 25% of the total energy consumption is being provided by biomasss and PV panels.

SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) –

A plan to reduce 40 tonnes of plastic waste from the laundry service processes was implemented in Q1 2024. The elimination of 700,000 plastic bottles in the catering service is planned for 2025.

SDG 15 (Life on Land) –

To assist the maintenance of the meadows surrounding the hospital and improve biodiversity, a herd of goats has replaced mechanical solutions since Q3 2024 leading to positive public attention.
The Project Company is also planning to promote a greenhouse and farm plots at the hospital gardens in collaboration with local NGOs and the pediatric and psychiatric units. The hospital is also planting additional trees to promote biodiversity and CO2 absorption.
