Our impact

Firenze Tramway, Italy

Background

The Project comprises the design, construction, financing, maintenance and operation of the Florence tram system (lines 1, 2 and 3), of a total length of 19.5km, served with a total of 46 vehicles. Line 1 has been operational since 2010. Line 3 started operations in July 2018 and serves residential and commercial areas to the north of Florence, between the city centre and the Careggi Hospital (further extensions are planned). Line 2 started operations in February 2019 and connects the city centre with Florence’s Peretola Airport via 13 more stops, including those at the Administrative Offices of Tuscany, the City University and the Courthouse.
The Florence tramway network contributes to a significant reduction in car congestion and CO2/PM10 emissions, with significant improvement in the city’s air quality, and has allowed for the pedestrianisation of Florence’s world-famous city centre.
The acquisition of the last tranche of shares and shareholders’ loan from the former EPC contractor was completed in December 2021, increasing Meridiam’s stake in the Project to 60.4%.

ESG/SDG Key Facts

The routes were adjusted to avoid any interference with the city centre heritage areas. As an illustration of the positive impact of the Project:
• A Park and Ride facility (with a capacity of 487 cars and 25 buses) was built next to Highway A1 at the end of Line
• It allows Florentines and tourists to access Florence central area in 20 minutes by tram rather than by car, at low rates.
Future intermodal interchange points are planned.
• During the initial months when Line 2 began operations there was a reduction of c. 12,500 private cars per day during the 7AM-10AM time slot on all monitored roads.
The Municipality of Florence was awarded the PIMBY (Please In My Backyard) Green 2019 and GUBBIO 2021 award thanks to the tram network and its CO2 emission reduction and air quality improvement.
