Aqaba Water Desalination, Jordan
Background:
The 30-year concession covers the design, construction, financing, operation, and maintenance of the Aqaba desalination plant, which will produce 300 million m3 of drinking water annually. It also includes the associated solar energy production and conveyance system to Amman.
In Q1 2025, the concession contract was signed by Meridiam and its partnered top-tier global developers and contractors with stronglocal knowledge. The Project is also backed by a wide group of leading lenders and DFIs and has the complete support of the Jordanian government. It will provide a long-term, reliable and sustainable solution to the chronic water scarcity issues in Jordan where climate change and population growth are expected to reduce water availability per capita by 30% in 2040.

ESG Matters:
The Project will ensure long-term benefits for Jordan and its communities:
SDG 6 (Clean water and sanitation) – It will provide Jordan with 300 million m3 of drinking water per year, supplying 30% of
the population with drinking water.
SDG 7 (Affordable and clean energy) – The solar plant included in the project will be the largest
one in Jordan; it will produce c. 28% of the roject’s electricity needs.
SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) – As the project is the country’s largest recent private investment and
infrastructure, local communities will benefit from additional employment opportunities in a key sector.
