In Kenya, Meridiam launches a pioneering wind and storage project, a first in East Africa

On the occasion of the Africa Forward summit, held in Nairobi on 11–12 May 2026, Meridiam and Craftskills Energy, in presence of the Government of Kenya, officially launched Siruai Wind and Storage project, a landmark energy initiative combining 100 MW of wind capacity with a 50 MWh battery energy storage system — a first in the country[1]. Through this initiative, Siruai represents a major step forward in the integration of renewable energy in East Africa and directly supports Kenya’s ambition to achieve 100% clean energy in its electricity mix by 2030.

Backed by an investment of more than €200 million, the project, located in Kajiado County south of Nairobi and adjacent to the Kipeto wind farm, will double Meridiam’s wind generation capacity in Kenya.

By combining wind generation with battery storage, Siruai provides a concrete solution to the intermittency challenges of renewable energy. The battery system will help optimize electricity generation and enhance grid stability, while improving service quality and continuity by reducing outages and voltage fluctuations. The result is a more stable, predictable and accessible electricity supply, supporting economic development, access to essential services, and regional attractiveness.

In line with its long-term investment model, Meridiam will develop Siruai Wind and Storage in close partnership with local stakeholders — including communities, public authorities and partners. This approach is designed to maximize local economic benefits, promote job creation, and foster the involvement of local businesses, while supporting community initiatives and ensuring sustainable integration within the project environment.

The project also includes concrete commitments to deliver measurable environmental impact. It is based on an optimized site layout designed to minimize impacts on biodiversity and migratory corridors, alongside wildlife protection measures and responsible resource management throughout construction and operation.

Finally, Siruai contributes to a broader regional dynamic aimed at strengthening power systems across East Africa. By improving the stability of Kenya’s grid — one of the region’s key energy hubs — the project will help facilitate cross-border electricity trade, support the progressive integration of regional power markets, and enhance energy security at a regional scale.
