PisaMover, Italy

Background

In 2022, Meridiam acquired a majority stake in the Pisamover project. Pisamover SpA is responsible for the design, construction, financing, operation, and maintenance of the cable-based people mover infrastructure connecting Pisa Airport to the city’s railway station. It is also responsible for two “park and ride” facilities (1250 lots) at the intermediary stop “San Giusto – Aurelia”, located along the Firenze – Livorno highway.

The project originally commenced operations in March 2017 and carries over 1 millions passengers per year. The rebalanced concession with the Municipality of Pisa runs until June 2054.

Meridiam has acquired 72% of the project with Leitner retaining the remaining shares. Leitner are the original provider of the cable-based technology and will stay as minority shareholder and back-to-back O&M contractor.

ESG / SDG Key Facts

The project is a green, sustainable, full-electric mobility solution that actively contributes to reduce the CO2 emissions in the area. Additional commercial collaborations with the airport and the airlines are being explored. Some of the UN Sustainable Development Goals to which the project contributes:

SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth),

being an efficient and sustainable public transportation service connecting the airport and the city, catalyzing the economic development of the surrounding area.

SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure),

being based on an innovative, modern, and green technology, and being the first people mover entered into service in Italy connecting an airport to the national railway network.

SDG 11 (Sustainable cities and communities),

as it contributes to enhance sustainability in the Pisa area due to its central role in the public transportation network, reducing traffic congestion and CO2. PisaMover is an essential piece of the local transportation plan of the city and is part of a strategic plan promoted by the Italian Ministry of Sustainable Mobility to improve the accessibility of Italy’s major airports.
