Wasted Gas Energy Recovery, WAGABOX, Vente-de-Bourse

Portfolio of purification and grid injection of landfill gas through innovative small scale industrial units.

Background

Meridiam has partnered with WAGA Energy, a spinoff of Air Liquide, specialized in landfill biogas recovery (transformation into purified gas to be injected in the natural gas grids). First “WAGABOX” have been operational since Q1 2017. The first 2 WAGABOX (600 Nm3/h total capacity) financed by Meridiam represent a cumulative investment of €6m.

Leveraging a technology developed by Air Liquide, WAGA Energy purchases biogas generated by nonhazardous waste landfills from a predictable landfill gas source, to purify it and re-inject it in natural gas grids. This sector benefits from a public and politic support.

As set by a decree issued on 27 October 2016, France targets to inject 1.7 TWh of biomethane in the grid by 2018 and 8TWh in 2023 (however, by 2016 only 0.8 TWh of biomethane was injected in the grid).

Wagabox is a unique concept that maximises landfill gas recollection compared to existing solutions. By establishing this partnership Meridiam supports Waga Energy by setting up a robust framework to structure the projects and accelerating Wagaboxes deployment.
